Training Philosophy

Dog training today is much more complex than it was 10 years ago. A decade ago the training style was based on dominance and corrections. Shock collars were an everyday item trainers would put on your dog in order to make sure the dog listened. Owners wanted to make sure the dogs knew that they were the boss, it was all about being the dominant alpha owner. “You do what I say because I say so” not because you respect me and want to please the owner.

Thankfully, that is not the preferred method of training today! Over the years; top-notch professors, psychologist, and trainers have broken down the principles of dog training. They have explored areas of dog versus wolves, pack mentality, pawsitive versus negative techniques, and explored deep into the dog and human relationship. We have discovered that correction base training weakens the bond between dog and owner. When being forced to behave the dog participates more out of fear than willingly. The dogs listen and behave to avoid getting shocked. I can’t imagine if we were to be treated that way, life would be miserable.

Today, many dog trainers have embraced pawsitive reinforcement and leadership training styles. Our goal is to establish a pawsitive relationship with our dogs and have fun. Yes, we still want to be the pack leader but our dogs should enjoying working for us. This style is much more enjoyable for the dogs because it includes treats, attention and games; plus the added benefit of strengthening the dog/owner relationship. Pawsitive reinforcement training is strongly sweeping the training scene and everyday trainers are switching to positive methods and the dogs are loving it!! Let Pawsitively Pets teach you the fun and inspiring way to train your dog.

Pawsitvely Pets uses the basic principles of operant conditioning. If your dog does well, he gets rewarded if not we reset and try again. We also will teach you how to be the leader with your dog(s), so they respects you and understands that they must listen to what you want and not what they may want to do. All in all, the main goal is enjoyable fun training with successful results.
With my background in exotic animal care and training I will also share training secrets of the zoo world and how you can maintain proper health without having to always go to the vet or groomer. With Pawsitively Pets you can learn how to make nail trims a non scary experience.

Training Services

Every dog learns differently as does every human. I pride myself in meeting the training needs that work best for each individual client, from adult to children. Maybe you learn by observing and then doing, so group classes are the way to go, but classes are not for every one or every dog. If you prefer a more intimate one on one attention than private training may be a better fit. Most dogs and owners greatly benefit from a few private training sessions before jumping in to a class with the distraction of several dogs. Private sessions are also great for those who have an inconsistent schedule and you can take it at your own pace.

Pawsitively Pets also offers behavioral training for those extra unruly dogs. If you have an aggressive or leash reactive dog there are ways to correct this behavior so you can better enjoy outings with your dog. I kindly ask, please do not just stop taking your dogs for walks just because your dog goes crazy when he sees another dog. Instead call me, and lets start working on the problem today! A lot of leash frustration/aggression is misunderstood; I can help you learn what is going on with your dog and teach you how to pawsitively work through it. I will spend time training and educating you on proper dog behavior/body posture and then we will work with your dog and develop a training plan.
